On day one, Sandfall Interactive’s debut effort, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, sold over 500,000 copies. Two days after this milestone, it has managed to double that number. Clair Obscur is a turn-based RPG by the aforementioned French developer, a fairly small team of 33 people from various walks of life.

The team includes Guillaume Broche, a former Brand Development Manager/Narrative Lead at Ubisoft Shanghai who notes Persona 3 and Final Fantasy VIII as some of his favorite games, Tom Guillermin, an ex-Ubisoft Gameplay Programmer who states GTA: Vice City and The Witness, and Jennifer Svedberb-Yen, an analog astronaut and sci-fi writer that claims Hollow Knight and Elden Ring as some of hers. The team also claims two League of Legends players, but, as a former Sona and Malazahar main in League myself, we’ve all made mistakes.

The game itself, a truly fascinating title that has received an astonishing amount of praise, is a bit difficult to describe beyond the basic term “turn-based RPG.” As it is, however, that’s probably for the best, because Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of those games, like the Nier series and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, where it’s a very good idea to go in as blind as you can.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
