The nominations for the 78th annual Tony Awards celebrating the best on Broadway for the 2024-2025 season saw Hollywood take a starring role Thursday, when a diverse mix of names best known for movies and TV scored noms.
The acting categories included noms for two-time Oscar winner George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Daniel Dae Kim (Yellow Face) and Harry Lennix (Purpose) up for Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, while Actress in a Leading Role in a Play saw Mia Farrow (The Roommate), Stranger Things star Sadie Sink (John Proctor is the Villain) and Succession Emmy winner Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray) in the mix.
On the musical side, nominees included actors Darren Criss (Maybe Happy Ending) and Jonathan Groff’s turn as Bobby Darin (Just in Time), while Megan Hilty (Death Becomes Her) and Nicole Scherzinger (Sunset Blvd.) were among the actress noms.
Featured Role nominees included Bob Odenkirk (Glengarry Glen Ross), the only nominee from that revival that also starred Kieran Culkin and Bill Burr; Jessica Hecht (Eureka Day); and One Day at a Time‘s Justina Machado (Real Women Have Curves: The Musical).
Paul Tazewell, coming off his historic Oscar win for Wicked‘s costumes, is nominated for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Death Becomes Her, which co-led all shows this morning with 10 nominations. Sam Mendes, the Oscar-winning American Beauty director, is up for Best Direction of a Play for The Hills of California.
Buena Vista Social Club, which scored 10 noms today, counts longtime (and now former) James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli among the lead producers up for a Best Musical Tony. In the same category is Death Becomes Her, from Universal Theatrical Group, which counts Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw, Jason Blum & James Wan and Debra Martin Chase among its producer nominees.
Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her and the Criss-starring Maybe Happy Ending all had 10 nominations today to lead all shows. After today’s news, next up is the Tony Awards ceremony June 8 hosted by another big Hollywood name, Tazewell’s Wicked collaborator Cynthia Erivo.
