Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield this afternoon thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, match winner Maguire reflected on what it means to get a win against Liverpool away.
It means everything. They’ve had the better of us over the last few years and it’s not been good enough for our club. We’ve not given our fans anywhere near enough days like today so it’s been a long time coming to this ground and picking up three points. It’s the old cliche, it’s only three points, but it’s definitely not. It means a lot more than that to the boys, to the club, to the fans.
I’ve been here seven years now and to come to this ground every time and not get three points has been tough. It’s for the fans, I hope they have a great night tonight, because of course it’s only three points on the table, but to come here and do it over Liverpool, it’s nice to get over on them.
You see all week in the build up, you see Juan Mata’s goals and Wayne’s goals that have won the games here for the club. So I’m sure in a few years time they will be looking back at my header. Football is all about memories, creating special memories, and I’m sure all our fans in the stadium will have a memory they won’t forget. We’ll all go home happy.
We won’t get carried away, we know the club isn’t in a position to get carried away. We need to use this as motivation to reach levels that they’ve reached in recent years because that’s where this club should be at.
