AT least 64 people were killed and 81 arrested as 2,500 heavily armed police and soldiers stormed Rio de Janeiro’s favelas in the city’s largest-ever anti-gang operation.

Gun battles raged for hours on Tuesday across the Alemão and Penha complexes, the strongholds of the powerful Red Command (Comando Vermelho) gang.

The conflict has left “bodies strewn all over the streets,” according to a community leader quoted by O Globo.

Governor Cláudio Castro said the city was “at war,” calling it “the biggest operation in the history of Rio de Janeiro.”

The narco terrorists who are fighting government forces appear to be using advanced weapons, such as Ukraine conflict style first person drones.

Rio De Janeiro is around 1300 miles from Belém, the city which is hosting COP30 in just over a week. Nevertheless with open gun battles in the streets of Rio, the Comando Vermelho narco terrorists might see COP30 as a golden opportunity to grab some high value hostages to leverage Rio de Janeiro authorities into backing down, or to force the release of arrested gang leaders.

Comando Vermelho have a long track record of hijacking and kidnapping for ransom, in addition to being significant regional narco traffickers.

Between the risk of attack from powerful narco terrorist kidnappers, deadly street battles in one of Brazil’s premier cities, an accommodation crisis and a local risk of Typhoid fever, and a large contingent of wealthy celebrities who are keen to show they care, who knows, this could end up being the most interesting COP yet.
