China’s emergence as a major player in Africa’s trade, investment, and aid has led many to question the nature of its involvement. Some critics say the exploitation of African resources, the trade of African people, the occupation of African land and the destruction of African culture are all essences of colonialism. Others say China is only interested in resources; its exports to Africa threaten local industries; and it is displacing Africa’s traditional partners, like the United States. The drastically diverging perceptions of China’s role in Africa are an interesting phenomenon. In truth, China’s economic engagement in Africa has created significant benefits for African countries. In this production we separate myths from facts in China’s ubiquitous presence in Africa.
