If dental implants are not properly cleaned they can accumulate plaque and tartar similar to natural teeth.
This tartar may damage the tissues surrounding them such as gums and bone. In the case of natural teeth it’s called periodontitis and in case of dental implants is called peri-implantitis.
Depending on the severity of the peri-implantitis the treatment will vary but it may include the debridement of the infected tissues and the decontamination of the implant surface.
In the most advanced cases of peri-implantitis the treatment may require to remove the dental implant.
