Richard Riakporhe (19-1, 15 KOs) destroyed a badly overmatched journeyman-esque Tommy Welch (16-1, 9 KOs) by a second-round technical knockout in a 10-round heavyweight fight. After an uneventful round one, the 6’5″ Riakporhe dropped Welch three times in the second, blasting him to the canvas with right hands. Welch, 30, looked gone after the first knockdown when he got poleaxed by a perfectly placed right hand from the 35-year-old Riakporhe. Barely beating the count at nine, Welch looked like he was on skates from that point on. He was in bad shape, staggering with every shot that the uncoordinated Riakporhe was hitting him with. It was disturbing to watch the two of them. What on Earth were these two doing on a PPV card behind a paywall? After the third knockdown, referee Mark Bates mercifully pulled the plug on this unearthly fight. The time of the stoppage was at 2:48 of round 2.
Ishmael Davis (15-3, 6 KOs) kept his career alive, defeating Sam Gilley (18-2-1, 9 KOs) by a razor-close 12-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant British junior middleweight title. Davis, who has gone through a rough career patch lately, losing three out of his last five fights, did just enough to edge the rounds against the surprisingly tough Gilley. It wasn’t pretty to watch with the overmuscled, robotic-looking Davis loading up with every shot. He did just enough to get the victory by the scores:
Mikie Tallon (11-0, 2 KOs) scored a beautiful fifth-round knockout of Fezan Shahid (4-3-2) in a flyweight contest scheduled for six rounds on the free portion of the preliminary card. Tallon nailed Shahid with a peach of a right uppercut in the fifth, sending him down flat on his backside. Referee Mark Bates then halted the contest. The official time was at 3:06 of round five.
