Masterclass: Flood Resilience Futures

Monday, September 8, 1:30 pm5:00 pm

Join Piet, Himanthi, William, and Declan for a dynamic Masterclass exploring how to shape flood-resilient futures through community-led design and catchment-based planning.

As the frequency, scale, and duration of flood events continue to rise, so does the urgency to act. This session offers a practical, people-focused approach to managing flood risks – backed by eight years of field-tested applications in both Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Rooted in the Fluvial Transect method, developed through the SEQ Water Futures project using a design charrette methodology, this masterclass will guide participants through:

 Citizen-centric: led by a Community of Practice, comprising lay-citizens, interest groups, professionals and governments;

 a visual approach to identifying problems and connecting them with solutions;

 collaboratively identify and develop options through drawing and discussion;

 build suites of preferred solutions within a framework that enables short-term as well as long-term solutions;

 complement the traditional flood modelling + engineering approach to increase diversity of participation and ownership.

Featuring international case studies in Indonesia, Fiji and Nepal we will also explore how the approach can be adapted to the catchments and communities of workshop participants.

The outcomes of this approach are a visualisation of the shared vision that underpins the biophysical nature of the catchment, and the social aspirations of the local communities.

Together both elements are the foundation for flood risk reduction strategies, best fit to making that local community safe and adapted to future flood impacts.

Whether you’re a planner, practitioner, policy-maker, or community advocate, this is a rare opportunity to gain tools for integrated, adaptive flood resilience planning.
