(26 Nov 2013) Hundreds of representatives from the business community across Latin America and the Caribbean met with their Chinese counterparts in San Jose on Tuesday, for a summit aimed at strengthening trade between the regions.
Around 550 business people from Latin America and the Caribbean attended the event in the Costa Rican capital, with over 350 companies represented from various sectors of the economy.
According to the Costa Rican Ministry for Foreign Trade (COMEX) the industries represented included manufacturing, agriculture, textiles and the services industry.
The 260 Chinese business people at the event came from around 189 companies from sectors such as textiles, the food industry, electronics and the construction industry.
Speaking at a joint news conference with the Chinese Vice-President for the Promotion of Foreign Trade, Yu Ping, Costa Rican Minister for Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzales, said the regions needed to continue working together to promote a favourable trade and investment environment.
She also said that currently only three Latin American countries had a working trade relationship with China; Chile, Peru and Costa Rica.
Yu said that China had the capability of exporting not only manufactured products to the region but also technology and equipment, “to raise the investment and industrialisation of Latin American countries in the future.”
The business conference also includes various forums for delegates covering agricultural development, world trade and inter-city cooperation.
The conference has been an annual event since 2007 and alternates between being hosted in China and a Latin American country each year.
