Chicago P.D.’s Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek are finally getting married — and Us Weekly has the first look at the nuptials, which unsurprisingly won’t go smoothly.
“It gets called off,” Marina Squerciati, who plays Burgess, exclusively reveals in the latest issue of Us while talking about the long-waited wedding.
Squerciati, 41, teases that there’s a scene prior to the wedding between Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) in which the newly-minted detective breaks down and cries. “Paddy acts like Prince Charming in that moment,” the actress says of her longtime scene partner.
Squerciati hints that Ruzek will give Burgess the “help” and “hug” that she needs to get the wedding back on track, confirming, it does in fact happen during the season 12 finale, which airs on Wednesday, May 21.
“Fans can breathe a sigh of relief,” Squerciati tells Us, revealing that the event is “not the wedding with dancing that everyone’s expecting,” but the ceremony will be full of “sweetness.”
She notes, “There’s no big party,” which worries her will make fans “a little disappointed.” However, Squerciati reminds viewers that “it’s the CPD” so nothing is “super, duper happy” but the Burzek wedding will be “happy.”

Squerciati adds that Burgess not only gets hitched to Ruzek after their two failed engagements, but she walks herself down the aisle in a “badass move.”
Fans might remember that Ruzek and Burgess got engaged during season 2, but she called it off one season later. Ruzek proposed again during season 7, but Burgess turned him down. When he asked again during season 11, she happily said “yes.”
When Burgess finally makes it down the aisle, she’ll share a sweet exchange with her boss, Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), which Squerciati says is very fitting for their dynamic.
“I’m walking down the aisle and I give Voight this like, beaming smile and he just kind of nods at me and I’m like, ‘OK, on brand,’” she says with a laugh, revealing that her Intelligence team is there for the special day.
Squerciati notes that while the wedding won’t be the only focus of the season finale — Voight’s battle with Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy) is a massive story line — it was something she and Flueger, 41, took very seriously.
The actress was even part of the dress selection. “We found a dress that I think was simple and sexy,” Squerciati says, which is evident in Us’ exclusive photos from the episode. “Burgess is always very buttoned up. She’s in blazers, she’s in button downs, like, literally. I wanted her to show a little skin.”
Flueger, meanwhile, adds his real-life emotions to the high-stakes scenes, according to Squerciati. “Paddy improvs,” she tells Us. “He is a little nervous and I can tell from his voice because I know him so well that Paddy was actually a little nervous. It was very sweet.”
