The China-Africa Forum entered its second day in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday.
During the two-day summit, the leaders from Africa and China are deliberating on the theme: “China-Africa Progressing Together: Win-Win Cooperation for Common Development”.
The 10 major programs to strengthen cooperation with Africa in the coming three years cover the areas of industrialization, agricultural modernization, infrastructure, financial services, green development, trade and investment facilitation, poverty reduction and public welfare, public health, people-to-people exchanges, and peace and security.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday China and Africa are facing unprecedented opportunities of development, outlining the ten-point development plan. Xi said China wants to build a relationship of equals.
In addition, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced 60 billion U.S. dollars of assistance and loans for Africa at the summit on Friday, which includes five billion U.S. dollars of grants in zero-interest loans and 35 billion U.S. dollars in preferential facility and export credit loans and concessional loans.
Xi also announced drought aid with about 160 million U.S. dollars’ worth of emergency food aid to the affected countries.
The summit is scheduled to conclude on Saturday with the release of a declaration and an action plan that will proclaim the two sides’ views on their relations and major regional and global issues, and map out the cooperation between the world’s second largest economy and the African continent.
This year’s meeting is the second time China has brought together African leaders since the forum was launched in Beijing in 2000. Since then, China’s trade with Africa has overtaken that of the traditional partners, Europe and the United States. The trade volume of China with the continent reached 220 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, 22 times that of 2000, when the forum started.
