iciHaiti - Politic : Presidential Advisor Louis Gérald Gilles on tour in the South

On Friday, May 16, 2025, Advisor Louis Gérald Gilles of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) was on an official mission to the Grand’Anse department, as part of his mission to foster institutional dialogue and consultation with the country’s key stakeholders and to monitor government actions at the regional level.

He took part in a working meeting organized by the Grand’Anse Departmental Directorate with the Departmental Directors and their respective staff to take stock of the difficulties encountered by the decentralized government services, particularly with regard to financial resources, office equipment, staffing, and appointment procedures. Possible solutions were discussed and recommendations were made to improve the functioning of public administration in the region.

The Advisor-President welcomed the consultation process initiated by the local authorities and reiterated the CPT’s commitment to strengthening the presence and effectiveness of the government in all departments of the country.

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Advisor Louis Gérald Gilles continued his tour and visited the Bishopric of Jérémie, where he met with ecclesiastical authorities from the Grand’Anse department.

During this meeting, marked by respect and attentiveness, several topics of mutual interest were discussed, including the challenges facing the ecclesiastical sector, such as the lack of a budget for the maintenance of religious infrastructure. These constraints compromise not only the preservation of architectural and spiritual heritage, but also the smooth running of pastoral and community activities.

Advisor Gilles reaffirmed his commitment to relaying these concerns to the highest levels of government and to advocating for greater accountability of public responsibilities in this sensitive area. He also praised the irreplaceable role of the Catholic Church in providing spiritual, social, and educational support to populations, particularly in rural areas.

Avenues for collaboration were discussed, while respecting the principle of state secularism and existing bilateral agreements, in order to strengthen the protection of religious heritage and revitalize the social missions carried out by the Church in Grand’Anse.
