In a new lab at the Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering in Ohio, public high school students are assembling electric cars from scratch.
Kubiak: “Our students are going to be ahead of the game by being high school graduates that have experience learning about and even building electric vehicles.”
Instructor Laura Kubiak says the EV lab has seven car lifts, a fleet of electric cars, and classrooms where students learn everything from how electricity works to problem-solving and engineering skills.
Kubiak: “And we actually have solar panels on the roof of our electric vehicle lab. So how cool is it to think that we can charge an electric vehicle with clean energy? And so the kids start to think about … how the use of electric vehicles is cutting down on emissions.”
The students can earn state certifications that will help them find jobs in the growing EV industry.
But Kubiak says even if they do not end up working with EVs, the program will give them a leg up.
Kubiak: “I feel like my students could be unstoppable … because they’ll have the technical skills and this background of environmental studies to really start to solve problems.”
