Tina Knowles Addresses The Rumi Moment With Gayle King
Tina continued her book tour in support of her recently-released memoir, ‘Matriarch.’ And on Wednesday, May 21, she made a stop in Brooklyn, New York, to sit down with Gayle King. Tina opened up about that viral moment during their candid chat at the Brooklyn Paramount. In video footage posted on Facebook, Gayle didn’t hesitate to bring it up, reenacting Tina’s gesture when Rumi attempted to speak into Beyoncé’s microphone.
Bey had brought her mom out on stage to help celebrate her achievement of becoming a New York Times’ Best Seller with her book. But Rumi couldn’t help but try to get a word into the mic, prompting Tina to interfere.
“Beyoncé’s introducing you, and Rumi goes to her, and she’s saying, ‘Mommy, mommy,’” Gayle said, mimicking Tina’s move. Tina and the crowd were brought to laughter by Gayle’s interpretation before the former hairstlist had some words to share on the situation.
“People wrote all kinds of narratives about it, but it was real life. Grandmas don’t play,” Tina joked. She then got serious, revealing:
It really wasn’t that, it was just that she was reaching for the mic because she wanted to say something and I realized that. And she was pulling, and I was like, ‘Oh, God,’ That’s all that needs to happen. The mic hits her in the face, and they say, ‘Oh, Beyonce hit her in the head.’”
I know Mama Tina be judging Bey’s disciplinary tactics!! I know that look! 😂😂😂😂🙄 pic.twitter.com/4EZ3Q9gQPX
