Schwarz-Bart, de la littérature à la musique: Itinéraire du jazzman Jacques Schwarz-Bart, by ethnomusicologist / musical anthropologist Esther Eloidin (Martinique), was published by Caraïbeditions earlier this month (7 May 2025). The book centers on the philosophical and aesthetic continuity between the work of André and Simone Schwarz-Bart, and the music produced by their son, Jacques Schwarz-Bart.
Description: Jacques Schwarz-Bart, son of André—winner of the 1959 Prix Goncourt for Le Dernier des justes (Le Seuil)—and Simone Schwarz-Bart— winner of the First Prize in World Literature for L’Ancêtre en Solitude (Le Seuil, 2015)—is a veteran jazzman who has graced the boards of the world’s greatest stages, from New York’s Lincoln Center to La Cigale, L’Olympia, and prestigious Parisian jazz clubs. Regarding his parents’ work, Jacques confides: “Le Dernier des justes inspired me the most in several ways. First, it allowed me to understand the trauma to which my father was exposed […]. It allowed me to forgive him. Of the books written by my mother, Pluie et vent sur Télumée miracle is the one that left a lasting impression on me. It defines a unique style where Creole thought—its poetry, humor, philosophy, and collective imagination—finds expression in French. This is the book that inspired the concept of Creole identity among all modern Creole authors.
This biography, introduced in the prologue by the poetic words of the renowned musician-singer and writer Roland Brival, is composed of a central notebook illustrated with archival photos, annotated scores, and testimonials. It is also filled with rich anecdotes and previously unpublished facts about André Schwarz-Bart, his father.
