For Royal Caribbean guests who were looking forward to excursions in Playa Mia in Cozumel at any point in 2025, we have some bad news for you!

In a letter sent out to guests who booked the Deluxe Beach Break excursion in Playa Mia, Royal Caribbean shared that these tours had to be adjusted, and as a result, the original tour location, length, and name have all been changed.

The communication from the cruise line said, “Recently, the tour operator for your Deluxe Beach Break at Playa Mia tour in Cozumel, Mexico, informed us that adjustments have been made to the excursion.”

It goes on to say, “Due to operational reasons, the location of the beach has been changed to Isla Mia, and the duration of the tour has been reduced from five hours to four hours.”

This translates to about three hours of relaxing at the beach after allotting an hour for transportation to and from the pier. Complimentary activities will be available during the excursion, as will an onsite restaurant.

Beyond these changes, the tour has also been renamed to “All Inclusive Isla Mia Beach Vibes” to reflect its new location.

Later in the statement released by Royal Caribbean, they apologized, adding that if passengers who booked the excursion no longer wanted to participate, they could change their plans online or once onboard.

While these changes may be disappointing, they are happening to pave the way for something particularly exciting.

Previously, Playa Mia Grand Beach Park offered excursions and opportunities for guests to relax at the beach, but has been closed to allow for the construction of the cruise line’s new private beach club.

Recently, Royal Caribbean purchased three properties just south of the Port of Cozumel, including the former site of the Playa Mia Grand Beach Park.

And on May 20, 2025, construction began to connect and transform all three adjacent properties into the brand new Royal Beach Club Cozumel.

The former resort featured Cozumel’s largest beach attraction, the Playa Mia Grand Beach Water Park, the Oasis Island Pool, and even the Jade Cavern, where guests could swim in scenic cenote waters.

For passengers who are seeking alternatives to visiting Playa Mia, Royal Caribbean has suggested doing excursions in Isla Mia instead – which is next to the original location. However, the excursions will still be temporarily more limited than before.

From May 1 through September 1 of 2025, only the beach, floating park, and an onsite restaurant at Isla Mia will be available – which is also related to the construction of the new beach club.

Additionally, all of the waterslides and kid areas will remain closed for the duration of construction.

Isla Mia will fully open for excursions on September 1, 2025, but the cruise line is keeping part of it open to give guests a comparable option rather than completely closing the former Playa Mia Park in the meantime.

When Isla Mia opens in September, it will be an all-inclusive experience for passengers, who will begin their day with a scenic drive through the verdant jungle in Cozumel.

When guests arrive, they will enjoy a complimentary welcome drink and can head to a sunbed or private day nest, both of which will require advanced reservations.

The only dining option is the Beach Food Park, which promises to have a variety of authentic Mexican specialties and comfort foods — and yes, that includes crispy chicken fingers.

While guests will be able to enjoy a limited part of Isla Mia in its entirety later this year, the full Royal Beach Club Cozumel will open in 2026, providing a new way to experience the island.

This will be the second of Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Clubs, and will feature private cabanas, kayaking, snorkeling, and dedicated pools for families or relaxation — along with specialty restaurants, a lounge with beachfront views, and even a street market.

Playa Mia was originally built in 1984 and was rebuilt in 2005 after being destroyed by a hurricane.

Passengers who frequent the destination have commented on the resort’s need for some renovations, so the construction and updates seem to be welcomed by the cruising community.

Guests who have previously enjoyed Playa Mia will be able to experience it reimagined as part of the new Royal Beach Club Cozumel.
