“My paintings are maps of memory, layered with the textures of place and language, —each mark a trace of lived anthropology.”

Description: “Home Away from Home” presents his works from the perspective of a landscape that transcends a single “home,” constantly evolving and shaped by memory, movement, and human connections. Since 1999, Parlá has visited Japan numerous times and has been deeply influenced by its climate and cultural styles.
The exhibition at POLA MUSEUM ANNEX will showcase a special selection of body of work, including Bizen pottery created during his residency at a kiln, collaborations with Japanese artists and fashion designers, and 18 artworks, including a new large-scale painting themed around Tokyo. The exhibition will highlight how Parlá’s expressions are shaped by various elements such as travel, urban encounters, collaborations, historical events, memories, and emotions.
KOTARO NUKAGA‘s exhibition will feature new paintings inspired by Parlá’s time travels and collaborations he’s made in Japan. For Parlá, who has experienced the many facets of Japanese cities and formed bonds with friends and artists, the new works are “a tribute to my friends and the moments that enriched my artistic journey.”
