iciHaiti – Insecurity : Many schools, colleges and universities closed

A survey conducted by the Haitian Progressive Parents’ Union (UPEPH) revealed that many schools and universities, both public and private, have ceased operations in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area and in some provincial cities. This situation is primarily due to widespread insecurity and violence by armed gangs.

Between February and March 2025, the survey revealed the complete shutdown of 347 private schools and 51 public schools in the capital. Higher education institutions were also severely affected, with the closure of 12 faculties of the State University of Haiti, 50 private universities, seven training centers under the supervision of ministries, and 29 teacher training colleges. In addition, 34 vocational training centers in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area have also ceased operations, impacting technical and vocational programs.

Unfortunately, the situation has deteriorated further since then, leading to an increase in the number of educational institution closures.

Between January and May 2025, more than 1,600 schools were forced to close in Haiti due to rising insecurity, according to an alarming report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
