Recently, the African Union (AU) imposed a historic ban on the donkey skin trade.
About
– The outcome follows the Dar es Salaam declaration, adopted at the first African Union–Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU–IBAR) Pan-African Donkey Conference in 2022.
– Africa is home to over two-thirds of the 53 million donkeys estimated to exist worldwide.
Reasons
– Donkey skin is used to make the traditional Chinese medicine ejiao and its demand has reduced the donkey population in China from 11 million in 1992 to just under two million.
– Now, the demand for ejiao is met primarily by imported skin sourced from South America and Africa.
African Union (AU)
– The African Union is made up of 55 Member States which represent all the countries on the African continent.
– It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organization of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999)
