The We Were Liars season 1 finale left fans with some lingering questions — and a few of the show’s stars have answers.
Spoilers for We Were Liars season 1 below.
Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) made her choice after remembering the fire that killed her fellow Liars — Johnny (Joseph Zada), Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) — and left the Sinclair family behind. While her story had a somewhat happy ending, other members of the family didn’t get the same treatment.
“I think there will be more,” Maheshwari told Us Weekly exclusively in early June. “I didn’t really know that’s how they were going to end it, until the script. … I’m ready for season 2. Do you know what I mean? Just as an audience [member] too, that cliffhanger makes you intrigued. I did not see that coming at all.”

After Cadence said goodbye to The Liars’ ghosts, she took her grandfather Harris’ (David Morse) boat to start her life in the mainland. The show then cut to its final scene, which showed Carrie (Mamie Gummer) taking her hidden Percocet pills, confirming that she relapsed. Johnny, presumed to have crossed over to the other side, is still hanging around — and communicating with Carrie.
Since the show is based on the book series of the same name, written by E. Lockhart, fans can presumably get answers to all their questions.
“At this point, if you haven’t read the book, watch the show [and then] read the book,” Lind told Us. “What’s so fun about that then, is you have so many extra elements from the book. It’s longer form, so there’s everything we couldn’t fit into the show.”
Keep scrolling for burning questions Us has after We Were Liars season 1:
What Did the Moms Do?
At one point in the finale, Carrie and Bess (Candice King) are discussing an incident from their past but don’t offer any details. This question is presumably answered in Lockhart’s prequel novel, Family of Liars.
Why Can’t Johnny Leave Beechwood Island?

It was assumed that Johnny crossed over to the other side with his fellow Liars at the end of season 1. However, he appears to have been communicating with his mom, Carrie, all summer long. Because of her addiction, it seems he can’t leave.
When Did Carrie Relapse — And Will She Marry Ed?
It’s hinted in the flashback story line during Summer 16 that Carrie might have relapsed but never confirmed. The finale also ends with her and Ed back together, so it’s unclear what their future holds.
Could Gat and Mirren Come Back?

“That would be really cool,” Maheshwari told Us. “If that happens, I’m so game. I’m so ready for that, but I really don’t know. It’s hard to say, I’m sure they have ideas. I’m not very aware of what they’re thinking.”
What Happened to Cadence?
“I don’t think Cadence is done whatsoever. I think that there’s a beauty to how she gets on that boat and leaves, but this is just her leaving,” Lind explained to Us. “But what does that mean? There’s an entire legacy. She has to figure out how to get along with her grandfather, so her secrets don’t leak or burn the place to the ground again. There [are] so many things that are unsaid when she goes away. It doesn’t mean she’s gone, I don’t believe.”
Will There Be a ‘We Were Liars’ Season 2?
A second season isn’t confirmed just yet, but the cast and crew are hopeful to return. There is, of course, a whole other book to be adapted.
