It’s been 25 years in the making. Now, this week, on June 5, 2025 at 9:24 PM CET, a little red house will land on the moon.
The moment will mark the culmination of a visionary project that blends the imagination of art with the precision of science.
But there’s a wild side story unfolding that’s taking place a world away from art and science – in the digital currency universe.
A meme coin linked to the Moon House project, has made its own big claim. It’s the world’s first meme coin tied to real-word lunar landing.
The coin was launched on May 23 and has since seen astronomical gains, at one point rising more than 2000% to reach a market cap of over US$210,000. Now, after just over a week in existence, Moon House Coin is held by over 1000 meme coin speculators world-wide, and trades with a market cap of around US$100,000 at the time of writing.
But what’s interesting is the buzz the coin has created on social media and cryptocurrency forums as thousands speculate the coin’s value could rocket if the house lands safely on the moon. In fact, arguably, never before has a modern-day lunar landing captured the attention of such a diverse crowd.
There is even talk so-called crypto ‘whales’ (speculators with millions of dollars) have been slowly accumulating Moon House in the lead-up to the lunar landing.
On the social media platform X, users have shared screen shots of Moon House coin beginning to appear in the digital wallets of the MoonPig meme’s top holders.
MoonPig is a $50 million meme coin giant, whose top holders’ wallets contain millions of dollars worth of various cryptocurrency.
Community vs imitation coins
The anticipation and intrigue surrounding the meme coin has been so strong, several imitation coins, have been created in recent days, with one also trading (at one point) above US$100,000 before crashing.
However, the imitation coins have seen their value capitulate, and have been labelled scams by the strong community supporting original Moon House coin linked to the Moon House project.
That community even launched a novel website – Moonhouse.fun – where anyone can create their own virtual house on the moon. Thousands have.
But, while so much hype surrounds the world’s first lunar landing meme coin, there are big risks.
In the world of meme coins, more fortunes seem to be lost than made. That hasn’t stoped thousands from dreaming big though.
The Moon House project
For those more interested in the space project (rather than the Moon House meme coin project), it was conceived over 25 years ago by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg.
The red Moon House is more than just a model, it’s a symbol of humanity’s longing for home and the boundless possibilities of imagination.
“Not as a scientific outpost or political symbol,” Genberg explains, “but as a quiet reminder of humanity, imagination, and home.”
The journey of The Moonhouse began with its launch on January 15, 2025, aboard the Japanese lunar lander RESILIENCE, which is operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
The strange red Moon House on board the rocket as it left Cape Carnival even caught the attention on the New York Post.
After traveling through space for over four months, the lander is set to touch down in the Mare Frigoris region, also known as the Sea of Cold.
Once on the lunar surface, the TENACIOUS rover, developed by Japan’s ispace Europe SA will deploy the cottage, carefully placing it to face Earth.
For those who want to witness this historic event, the landing will be broadcast live on Youtube at the link below.
While Mikael Genberg and the Moon House creators will be watching hoping their vision becomes reality, they would have never expected that so too will thousands of cryto ‘bros’ and ‘gals’ hoping their Moon House coins turn to gold.
