Description: Beyond Representation on PAMMTV highlights the abundant contributions made by Caribbean creators to avant-garde performance art. Accompanied by on-site performances, this online exhibition features the work of an intergenerational group of artists from the Caribbean or of Caribbean descent who employ the body and live action to critically engage with their social, cultural, and political realities. Collectively, the works of Jeannette Ehlers, Tirzo Martha, Carlos Martiel, Viveca Vázquez, and Merián Soto expose and refuse oppressive colonial ideologies while creating multiple narratives of freedom, healing, solidarity, and joy.
A three-part series, Beyond Representation on PAMMTV explores the intersection between performance art and video from the mid-1980s to today, addressing the legacies of colonialism as they manifest through trauma, systemic racism, environmental degradation, and social inequalities and fragmentation. In these artworks, physical presence becomes mediated presence, establishing a distance between the performer and the audience and encouraging reflection on image-making and the representational qualities of the digital medium.
The first installment of Beyond Representation on PAMMTV will be on view to global audiences from September 26, 2024, through June 30, 2025, via the museum’s online streaming platform.
Beyond Representation is organized by Iberia Pérez González, Andrew W. Mellon Caribbean Cultural Institute Curatorial Associate at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). This exhibition is presented by PAMM’s Caribbean Cultural Institute. PAMM’s digital initiatives are funded in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
