“Waka Tjopu: Echoes of a Movement”— a powerful retrospective of a defining chapter in Surinamese art history— will open at Readytex Art Gallery on July 5, 2025, at 7:30pm. This collective exhibition, featuring archival materials, photographs, collective works, and individual pieces by René Tosari, Ray Daal, John Djojo, Steve Ammersingh, Kenneth Flijders, Rudi Wagiso, Winston van der Bok †, and Soeki Irodikromo †, will be on view until August 30, 2025. Readytex Art Gallery is located at Steenbakkerijstraat 30, Paramaribo, Suriname.

Description: This exhibition reunites the still-active members of the artist collective Waka Tjopu – perhaps for the very last time – and offers a unique visual account of their shared commitment to social awareness and cultural decolonization during the turbulent 1980s in the young Republic of Suriname. More than just a retrospective, Waka Tjopu: Echoes of a Movement invites reflection on the role of art in times of change — and what it continues to mean today.
