GMA3 Anchor Overhaul After T.J., Amy Exits Explained Amid Uncertain Future

GMA3 has gone through several anchor changes following Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes’ departure — and now ABC viewers are questioning the show’s future.

The Good Morning America spinoff debuted in 2018 as a replacement for The Chew. The morning show was originally hosted by Michael Strahan and Sara Haines. After Haines went on maternity leave in 2019, actress Keke Palmer filled in as a cohost before going on to become a full-time coanchor.

GMA3 was put on pause at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic before returning with a headline-driven format. Robach took over alongside ABC News chief medical correspondent Jennifer Ashton in 2020. Later that year, Holmes joined the duo.

In November 2022, news broke that Robach split from husband Andrew Shue after she was spotted spending time with Holmes. Us Weekly broke the news in January 2023 that Robach and Holmes were officially axed from ABC and before the network confirmed their departure from GMA3.

Rhiannon Ally, DeMarco Morgan and Gio Benitez were just a few of the show’s temporary hosts — in addition to Eva Pilgrim. Ashton, Morgan and Pilgrim became GMA’s permanent successors in 2023, though Ashton departed one year later.

A series of layoffs in 2025 ultimately led to Morgan and Pilgrim’s exits. In June 2025, GMA3 went through a rebranding in an effort to make the show more aligned with Good Morning America’s lineup.

GMA3 has been led by a variety of anchors, starting with Strahan and Haines. They then became a trio alongside Palmer before COVID forced the show to go on hiatus. Pandemic: What You Need to Know was initially considered to be a temporary rebranding in an effort to keep people up to date on the COVID pandemic with Robach, Holmes and Ashton taking over.

Robach and Holmes’ relationship scandal led to their exit in 2023. “After several productive conversations with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, about different options, we all agreed it’s best for everyone that they move on from ABC News,” ABC said in a statement at the time. “We recognize their talent and commitment over the years and are thankful for their contributions.”

Ashton, Morgan and Pilgrim initially replaced Robach and Holmes, but by 2024 Ashton stepped away. Pilgrim, for her part, was announced as Deborah Norville’s successor on Inside Edition in July 2025 following a series of layoffs at ABC earlier in the year.

Pilgrim called joining Inside Edition as its new anchor “a dream job.”

“I have been an avid viewer and fan of the show for many years,” she said. “I’m pinching myself that I get to work with this amazing team. It’s truly an honor to join a show with such a long, rich history.”

After Pilgrim’s move was announced, Variety reported that Pilgrim’s GMA3 cohost left the show and ABC News.

Pilgrim’s move to Inside Edition came after ABC News grouped its overnight programming and GMA3 with Good Morning America as a way to cut costs. According to Variety, ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic told staffers in a memo that Morgan was leaving the show and the company.

“He has decided to begin a new journey and will be departing ABC News,” Karamehmedovic said in the memo.

Why It’s a Big Deal

Casting speculation originally arose after GMA3 reportedly laid off several workers in March 2025, but there was no official statement made at the time. Pilgrim and Morgan’s respective departures caused ABC viewers to be concerned about who would be taking over in their place — or whether this was the end for the show.

“What we have said from the beginning is that we are unifying all day parts under the GMA umbrella and team and that includes seeing all members of the extended GMA family in the third hour,” a spokesperson told the New York Post in April 2025. “The third hour is a valued part of the GMA franchise.”

There has been speculation that weekend host Benitez and weekday broadcaster Ginger Zee could be moved over to GMA3. Others have questioned whether Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts and Strahan will play a more active role in the spinoff.

The ABC spokesperson addressed that in their April 2025 statement, saying, “Robin, George, and Michael have been on before, and they will continue to be featured.”
