South African Court Halts Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu’s Funeral | Firstpost Africa | N18G
The row over former Zambian President Edgar Lungu’s funeral continues. In the latest, a South African judge halted his burial while his funeral service was underway yesterday. This marked an escalation of a standoff between the Zambian government and Lungu’s family. The court ruled that both parties had agreed that Lungu would not be buried until the case over his funeral was decided. Lungu died on June 5 while seeking medical care in South Africa. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema sought to lead a state funeral for his predecessor. But, Lungu’s family blocked his remains from being repatriated, claiming that he would not have wanted Hichilema at his funeral. The Lungu family’s stance did not sit well with President Hichilema. The Zambian government moved the court to stop the burial in South Africa.
