The central idea of democracy is the only reason anyone has anything is the rest of us (all of us) let them. The central problem of democracy is that a day of work paying a dollar to one person and a million dollars to another person inevitably leads to a very few owning everything and everyone as wealth concentrates upwards to fewer and fewer individuals (it does not “trickle down”). The central question of democracy is how much we limit individual wealth to prevent self-destruction. Freedom is not greed, it is to agree to let the gifted and driven succeed but at the same time not let them become our masters. Taxation and regulation counterintuitively safeguard freedom, and why billionaires are automatically enemies of democracy and never should have been allowed to accumulate obscene wealth. The goal of the right is to evade taxation and regulation and practice absolute greed. The more they succeed the closer the end of democracy.
