Manchester United could do with midfield reinforcements following Christian Eriksen’s departure, which explains the recent links with Douglas Luiz of Juventus.

The former Aston Villa man is Premier League-proven, and not too long ago, he was touted as a £100 million player with the likes of Pep Guardiola interested in his services.

In his last season with Villa, the Brazilian registered 10 goals and as many assists, while playing as a deep-lying playmaker.

United need someone who can progress the ball from deep, while also being a solid presence in the midfield. And the Rio de Janeiro-born star offers both.

That form prompted the Bianconeri to splurge €50 million last summer, but the 27-year-old’s year-long stay in Italy has been nothing short of disastrous.

Douglas Luiz on the move

In his debut campaign, the Brazil international earned a meagre six starts in all competitions, completing 90 minutes only four times.

Injuries did not help either, with the former Manchester City starlet picking up four separate muscle injuries. And now, the Turin-based side are looking to cut their losses.

There were reports that a swap deal could be on the cards, but United have turned down all those options. Juventus are looking at a permanent sale.

Douglas Luiz has multiple suitors in the English top-flight, including Everton who were reportedly frontrunners and were preparing an offer.

But Football Insider have claimed that the Toffees are only looking at a loan deal, while the Red Devils are prepared to offer a loan deal which can subsequently be converted into a permanent offer, thereby propelling them to first spot in the race.

“Man United have registered their interest in signing Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

“Everton are also keen on the 27-year-old, who has four years remaining on his current contract but could leave Italy with a return to the Premier League a possibility.

“However, David Moyes’ side would prefer to sign the Brazil international on loan rather than committing to a permanent deal given the finances involved.

United in pole position

“Juventus are keen to offload Luiz this summer and are considering their options, but would prefer to accept permanent offers rather than letting him leave on a short-term basis.

“Man United are willing to negotiate a loan-to-buy deal with the Italian club, placing them firmly ahead of Everton in the race to reach an agreement.”

The report does not make it clear whether the 20-time English league champions’ offer will include an option or obligation to buy.

INEOS are looking at a low-cost investment to strengthen the midfield, so such a deal makes sense. Other names are also on the list as well, and it will be interesting to see if the team recruits any midfielder before the window slams shut.
