This SSD Will Self Destruct In …
It was back in 2012 when the SATA RunCore SSD amused us and viewers of the PCPer Podcast with their self destructing drive. It had two buttons, a green one that just did a governmental style data wipe and a red button which would electrocute the NAND inside the drive. We never did find out how many user clicked that red button just to see what happens, but you can bet it was more than one that did and then phoned IT to complain their drive no longer worked.
TeamGroup is bring this feature back with their P250Q-M80 M.2 PCIe 4×4 SSD. As you can see you do need to provide it a two wire plug, one assumes that the wire comes with the SSD with an adapter for Molex as those two pin connectors are fairly rare today. The drive is capable of secure erase as well as committing suicide, but that’s nowhere near as fun as watching the magic smoke coming out of an SSD. It takes about 10 seconds to fry itself, and Hackaday has a video of it in action if you want to see it happen.
