The Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico [Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, MAC] in Santurce, Puerto Rico, invites you to the opening of the collective exhibition “MAR ADENTRO,” curated by Marina Reyes Franco. The participating artists are (in alphabetical order) Carolina Caycedo, Gwladys Gambie, Daniel Lind Ramos, Tessa Mars, Joiri Minaya, Ángel Otero, Kiván Quiñones, Dave Smith, and William Villalongo. The opening takes place on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 11:00am to 5:00pm, at Room 4 (the Julio Rosado del Valle Room). The exhibition will be on view through October 12, 2025.

Description (MAC): Curated by Marina Reyes Franco and organized around a selection of works from the MAC’s Permanent Collection, the exhibition invites us to flow inward; considering waters as an archive of experiences, from rivers to the sea, connecting islands, bodies, and struggles.

The exhibition consists of two fundamental works by Daniel Lind Ramos, along with pieces that have been part of the exhibition program for the past five years, in addition to a recently acquired work by Ángel Otero and a loan from Tessa Mars.

With the participation of a diverse group of artists from the Caribbean and its diasporas, “MAR ADENTRO” focuses on the sea and rivers not only as geographical markers, but also as channels of ancestral memory, material sources, and sites of environmental reflection and resistance.

Some pieces confront the spectacle and contradictions of Caribbean tourism. Others honor the cultural labor of coastal communities and the persistence of survival among the creatures who live among estuaries and mangroves, awash in memories and colonial destruction.

Water becomes a metaphor, a material, and a method. From the conch shell transformed into a surreal portal for communion with the orishas, to the piece that explores imperial collecting practices to reconfigure a Black cosmology through the sea, land, and sky, each work reclaims water as a space of power.

Together, these works create a conversation from the source of the river to the depths of the ocean, inviting us to listen to the shells, the roots, the waves, and ourselves.
