WWE Always Planned Pat McAfee’s RAW Exit Ahead of Football Season

Pat McAfee’s WWE RAW departure didn’t catch anyone in WWE by surprise.

According to those within the company via Fightful Select, officials were already expecting McAfee to step away by August or September due to his commitment to college football season. His exit was seen as inevitable, planned or not, and WWE had already lined up Corey Graves as the fallback.

Graves returning to RAW commentary wasn’t a reactive move—it was part of WWE’s long-term strategy. After voicing frustration about being shifted to NXT earlier this year, a WWE higher-up sympathized, calling his versatility both a gift and a curse. His ability to work across any brand made him the obvious choice once McAfee’s schedule became unworkable.

Internally, McAfee is still viewed very positively. WWE sources say he’s consistently respectful and professional behind the scenes, and while there’s no set return schedule, the door remains wide open. For now, WWE expects the relationship to continue—but how often he’ll appear going forward remains uncertain.
