Congress leader Faisal Patel, son of the late Ahmed Patel, a close confidant of Sonia Gandhi, alleged that a “cliqueish culture” dominated by “out-of-control advisors” is hurting the party.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Patel said these advisors have managed to influence Rahul Gandhi in ways that alienate experienced and well-meaning loyalists.
While describing Rahul as “an amazing person” leading the party “on the right track,” Patel said poor counsel from a “closed group” was sidelining capable members.
Speaking about his own political journey, Patel claimed the Congress has failed to reward loyalty or legacy.
“Dynasty and legacy should come from merit,” he said, noting that others in similar situations were given tickets or posts after the death of a political family member, whereas his requests were turned down.
This was despite, he said, successfully completing assignments given by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as earning praise from party treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal.
Patel On ‘Dead Economy’ Remark
Breaking ranks on a sensitive issue, Patel disagreed with Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of Donald Trump’s description of India as a “dead economy,” stating, “I wouldn’t have agreed with that assessment.”
He went on to praise BJP leaders, saying, “Modi ji, Shah are doing a great job. Dr. Jaishankar is very good too. The country is in safe hands.”
Although reaffirming his Congress membership, Patel admitted to deep frustration. “I worked very hard for nothing, it hurts. I feel disgruntled, but I continue to do good work. I can be a huge asset for the party,” he said.
His remarks add to a growing list of public expressions of dissent within the Congress, spotlighting what he described as a “talent-agnostic” organisational culture.
