Fitness and physical exercise are a HUGE part of my family’s life. Between helping my kids practice for soccer and volleyball games, working out, and riding my bike, I’m always engaged in some form of physical activity. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to abstain from all of that for two whole months.

I advise my patients to refrain from most physical activities for two months to allow for healing and to avoid complications. This timeframe applies to non-contact activities that involve significant movement but minimal or no contact. For example, after two months, you could consider returning to basketball but participating in a full 5-on-5 game will require a bit longer recovery.

Earlier this year, I had a patient who underwent a procedure and had an outstanding recovery in the first two months. She was looking AMAZING, and I cleared her to resume some of her physical activities. However, a few weeks later, we received a text informing us that she had attended a boxing/sparring class and got hit in the face, directly on the healing chin implant, causing it to become misaligned. It’s safe to say that boxing is not an activity you should return to after only two months.

Physical activity is an essential part of my daily routine and that of many others. Exercise has substantial documented benefits for mental and physical well-being, and I personally experience its positive effects in my life.

Two months can feel like an eternity away from the gym, but if you focus all that energy on your healing journey during this time, not only will your results improve significantly, but you’ll also return to your chosen physical activities with a renewed excitement once your two-month hiatus is over.
