(Bloomberg) — Canada’s central statistics agency accidentally released factory data a day before schedule.
Statistics Canada confirmed it mistakenly published manufacturing sales numbers for June on its website Thursday morning. Once the issue was identified, access to the tables was immediately disabled and the pages were frozen, the agency said.
It did not provide the data tables that were published, and said the information will be released as planned on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Ottawa time.
“Statistics Canada takes this incident very seriously. We are conducting a thorough review and will determine whether additional safeguards are required to prevent a recurrence,” Carter Mann, chief spokesperson for the agency, said in an email.
It’s not the first time Statistics Canada has made such an error. In 2019, worse-than-expected quarterly gross domestic product figures were released nearly half an hour before schedule, moving markets.
Last year, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics also accidentally posted key inflation data 30 minutes early.
In recent years, the agency has limited early media access to many of its releases, eliminating so-called “lockups” for several economic indicators. While manufacturing sales data don’t typically have a significant market impact, the ongoing trade dispute with the U.S. has raised the importance of the statistics as policymakers and economists parse the effects of tariffs.
Reuters first reported the early release of the data.
