Estevao Willian will be starting for Chelsea sooner rather than later

Chelsea’s next fixture comes this Friday night against West Ham in the Premier League and they will be hoping to improve on our stalemate against Crystal Palace on the opening day.

One player who is knocking on the door for his first Premier League start is Estevao Willian after making his league debut on Sunday.

Estevao has shown so much promise already and looks like he’s more than ready to be starting games for Chelsea. The idea has always been to slowly bed him in and to be honest, that may well remain the case. But he is certainly now in for a shout to start on Friday with Jamie Gittens not really on it the last two games and Pedro Neto quiet in the last game.

Let’s see what happens there, but this boy is full of confidence.

I love his attitude and maturity already, and you can see how buzzing he has been to have made his Premier League debut.

Estevao reacted this week:

“First of all, I want to thank God.

“I didn’t just fulfill my dream, but also my family’s: making my debut in the Premier League, the greatest league in the world! I’m very grateful for the love and support from all the fans. I’m still adapting to everything new, but thanks to God, everything is happening in the best way possible.”

I like that he’s acknowledging the time it will take to fully adapt, something that some fans need reminding of as well.

But he’s also said this on the Chelsea website this week:

“I have adapted a lot quicker than I thought I would thanks to the manager, the coaching staff and all my new team-mates. They have all helped me so much and given everything to me since I arrived to make me feel comfortable and give me confidence. Everyone has helped me adapt to the game, but also the new conditions here.

“The way the fans have treated me since I arrived has been incredible, so I am going to do my best to make them happy. I am just going to keep working hard every single day. I want to win matches and if we do that, we will win trophies as well.”

But the way Estevao has looked so far, he looks like he can take the weight of the world on his shoulders and run all day with it.

Like many great Brazilian footballers that came before him, he has that strong mentality and work ethic. I think most Chelsea fans would happily see him start now – and we absolutely have to beat West Ham. I even thought Palace at home is a game we need to win if we want to be up there, but this West Ham team are bad so a win is a must.
