The Okavango Delta is one of the most exclusive wilderness destinations in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the backdrop to wild Africa’s grand spectacle, presenting unparalleled wilderness experiences in a serene inland delta unlike anywhere else on Earth. A journey to the Okavango Delta, deep inside Africa’s pristine interior, is like no other, encompassing vast wetlands and expansive drylands. Visitors traverse the Delta’s meandering waterways, passing palm and papyrus-fringed islands, thick woodland, resplendent with lush vegetation, and teeming with rich wildlife.
The largest intact inland delta in the world, the Okavango Delta is situated deep within the Kalahari Basin. Fed by the Okavango River, originating in the Angolan Highlands to the north and often referred to as the ‘jewel’ of the Kalahari.
Moremi Game Reserve was voted ‘the best game reserve in Africa’ in 2008, by the prestigious African Travel and Tourism Association. The Batawana people of Ngamiland took the initiative to proclaim a game reserve in 1963, naming it after their late Chief Moremi III. It is the only officially protected area of the Okavango Delta, and ranks as one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa.
The Khwai Concession gets its name from the Khwai River in the Okavango Delta, situated next to the Moremi Game Reserve, it also offers a unique safari experience in one of Botswana’s most renowned wildlife regions: the Okavango Delta. Once a hunting concession, it was established by the local Khwai villagers. This community plays a vital role in the conservation and management of the area, making it a leading example of sustainable eco-tourism.
Both Khwai Concession and Moremi Game Reserve boast an impressive fauna, and are well-known for their large herds of elephants and buffalo. Lions are frequently spotted in the area, along with leopards. The wildlife also includes lechwe antelopes, giraffes, wild dogs, hyenas, zebras and antelope, and is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
