A joint mission of the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was recently held in the municipalities of Corail and Pestel.
Main objective : To assess the resilience of local food systems and their direct link to school canteen supplies, in order to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement with a view to sustainable food security and the agroecological transition.
During this mission, several key actions were carried out :
– In-depth discussions with local authorities, farmers, young agroecologists, rice farmers, and managers of small cassava processing units;
– Analysis of local agricultural practices and value chains to understand the potential and constraints of agroecological production;
– Assessment of local capacities for processing and preserving agricultural products, in order to reduce post-harvest losses and improve food self-sufficiency;
– Identification of marketing opportunities and partnerships to facilitate the distribution of surpluses and strengthen the links between sustainable agriculture and school nutrition;
– Review of agricultural ecosystems, dominant farming practices, and levels of soil and water degradation.
The recommendations of this mission will enable the development of a tailored proposal, based on available and available resources, including those that could be mobilized in the medium and long term, to contribute to strengthening the resilience of food systems in the study areas.
