Your SSD May Have Issues, But It’s Not Caused By Microsoft’s Recent Patch

There Is An Issue With Drives That Are 60%+ Full, But The Cause Has Yet To Be Determined

Microsoft, along with Phison, have been conducting extensive tests to determine why drives which are over half full are failing during large copy operations.  The one thing that does seem to be true is that it was not the recent KB5063878 which triggers the failures. It is not spelled out in Microsoft’ recent update, but as they are continuing their investigation it seems likely they’ve been able to replicate the issue on a system without the recent patch installed.

You are still able to submit logs from machines that have had their SSD disappear during large copy operations, regardless if the drive came back after a reboot or not.  If you do have the misfortune to have this happen please do think about doing so in the hopes a root cause can be identified. In the meantime, if you have an SSD over half filled, be gentle with it.
