WWE Backlash 2025 took place at the Enterprise Arena in Saint Louis in front of a full crowd. One of the matches featured Lyra Valkyria defending the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship against Becky Lynch. The story between them developed over several events.
The storyline before this match was interesting. Before Night 1 of WrestleMania 41, Bayley was set to team with Valkyria for a WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match on Night 2. Bayley was attacked backstage by an unknown person, and Valkyria needed a new partner. Becky Lynch returned on Night 2 and teamed with Valkyria to win the titles.
The next night on RAW, they lost the titles in a rematch, with Lyra Valkyria taking the fall. After the match, Becky Lynch attacked Valkyria and turned heel. The next week, Lynch said she attacked Bayley and explained she also targeted Valkyria because of Valkyria’s connection to Bayley.
Lyra Valkyria said she would defend her Women’s Intercontinental Championship against Lynch at Backlash, and The Man. That set up the match between the two Irish women. This match went on second of the night, right after Jeff Cobb showed up to help Jacob Fatu retain the WWE United States Title.
This match was a rough one, as Becky Lynch was busted open on her elbow and her lip. They traded submission holds and tried to out-wrestle each other. Eventually, Lynch got Lyra beaten down in the corner as she applied even more punishment.
Lyra’s fiancé was at ringside, and Becky Lynch mocked him as she continued to beat the former NXT Women’s Champion around the ring. Lyra got mad, but Lynch beat her down again. Then they started trading slaps in the ring. They continued on, with Lynch trying to steal a win by grabbing the bottom rope, but referee Jessika Carr stopped her.
The match continued and Lyra was able to get out of a Dis-Arm-Her. Then she kicked out after a Man-Handle Slam twice. Fans were applauding this match as it continued. Fans chanted “this is awesome” as Becky Lynch tried to figure out what her next move would be. So, Lynch went to ringside, where she retrieved a chair. She used this as a distraction to expose the top turnbuckle, but Lyra blocked an Irish whip into the corner. Then Lyra nailed her moonsault for a near fall.
Becky Lynch nailed another manhandle slam, but Lyra kicked out. Then Lyra hit a Night Wing, but Lynch kicked out of that.
Then they traded roll-up pins, and Lyra was able to get a three count. After the match, Becky Lynch beat Lyra down and applied a Dis-Arm-Her, but she wouldn’t let it go. This was quite a scene as more offiicals slid in the ring to help the Women’s US Champion. They said that Lyra may have a broken nose as well, and Lynch finally let go.
We will have to see who steps into the WWE Women’s United States Title. There are a lot of possibilities down the line, and we can’t wait to cover what’s next.
