I recently spent a few weeks home in Minnesota, and let me tell you, the time away worked magic. Not only do I actually get the chance to slow down whenever I visit my mom in the Midwest, but I also get some much needed one-on-one face time with my hero (a.k.a., my mama). We talked about life, had nice dinners out, and tried some of my latest fashion discoveries—which I love when my mom approves of, of course.
The most recent piece I acquired? Madewell’s Mary Jane espadrilles that my mom and I haven’t stopped wearing since we put them on. Or, well, more so my mom, because she loved them so much, she claimed them—but I’ll happily give them to her because my mom’s picky about shoes, and the fact that she loved these fresh-out-of-the-box speaks volumes about them. If you know my mom, you know: Shoes aren’t easy for her, but these were an easy win.

She likes the idea of heels, but won’t wear them. So, she’s keen on flats, but at 5-feet-4-inches tall, she also likes to get a bit of height in. These Mary Janes are ideal for that; there isn’t a tricky, hard-to-walk-in heel, but rather a one-inch platform raffia sole that offers just the right amount of boost—for my mom and me (I’m about 5-feet-8-inches). The woven design—a huge summer 2025 trend—is crafted from a supple leather that has some give, which means that while they might feel a bit snug at first, they’ll shape to your feet with wear. Plus, the woven upper ensures ample air flow, so sweaty feet are a thing of the past.
My mom and I are obsessed with the chocolate brown color, but I’m also eyeing the red colorway, as well as the on-sale cotton-canvas iteration that’s just as perfect for summer adventures. Plus, we both agreed how versatile the design is; we plan on styling them with cropped jeans, linen skirts, and flowy dresses—no matter how you wear them, they’ll get you endless compliments.
