Hughie Fury out of Michael Pirotton fight
Hughie Fury (30-3, 17 KOs) will not compete at this coming Saturday’s GBM: DEEP WATERS event against Michael ‘Bomaye’ Pirotton (10-1, 4 KOs) following a doctor’s determination that the hand injured in his April TKO win over Dan Garber requires several more weeks to finish healing.
Fury’s right hand suffered fractured metacarpals en route to the April 4th win and was subsequently treated by Dr Tom Rigby of Lawton House medical centre in Fury’s home town of Congleton, Cheshire.
Last week, the British Board of Boxing Control requested a report from Dr Rigby on the current condition of Fury’s hand and whether Fury was cleared to compete on Saturday June 28th.
The report was received by the board on Friday, June 20th and concluded that the fractured metacarpals had not yet finished knitting fully back together and that Fury should not compete.
On the basis of this advice, the Board subsequently declined to approve Fury’s bout for this weekend, requiring his removal from the card.
Fury will now complete final rehabilitation of the hand and is expected to return to the ring on a GBM Sports card taking place in late August or early September.
A spokesman for Team Fury said, “Hughie did not want to withdraw from this bout and was adamant he was more than ready to compete and win. The British Board of Boxing Control takes the health and safety of boxers very seriously and would not countenance Hughie competing until his hand is fully healed.
“Hughie is upset that he has been withdrawn from the card but he respects the Board’s decision. He will continue to stay in fighting shape and is targeting a return to the ring around late August or early September. He remains focused on his goal of becoming world heavyweight champion in 2026.”
Hughie Fury is the former British Heavyweight Champion and WBO Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion. He has challenged once already for the world heavyweight championship (vs Joseph Parker, 2017) and has stated an intention to win the title next year.
