Play Higher for Behavioral Health is a virtual reality game that simulates the basics of a job in the behavioral health social work career field. In the game, you’ll help a social worker with her first client of the day. Through quests, you will earn the client’s trust and find a solution that best fits her needs. Learn about key social work concepts such as open-ended questions, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a person-in-environment approach, and the importance of self-determination. Earn interactable prizes to decorate your virtual therapy office! This virtual reality game was developed with a target audience of middle and high schoolers and college students, and it is playable by anyone 13 years of age and older with a Meta Quest headset. It is available on the Meta Quest app store for Meta Quest virtual reality headsets. Great for school guidance counselors, teachers, social workers, and others who offer career exploration for middle school and up.

This game was created with funds from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia University School of Social Work, and the U.S. Department of Labor. The total cost of the game was $204,949. $93,747 (45%) was funded through U.S. Department of Labor–Employment & Training Administration grant, awarded by WV Higher Education Policy Commission. The remainder ($111,201, 55%) was funded by the CARES Act to increase the behavioral health workforce.
