Puerto Rico’s Museum of Contemporary Art [Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, MAC] will host artists Alice Proujansky and Christopher Gregory-Rivera, who will have a discussion on the act of remembering as activism—”El archivo radical: La memoria como activismo” [The Radical Archive: Memory as Activism]—on July 15, 2025, at 7:00pm, at the museum’s interior courtyard. Organized by Aperture Magazine and the MAC, this event will bring together both photographers to discuss their use of the archive as a tool for memory and activism.

Proujansky will discuss her photobook Hard Times are Fighting Times (2023), which explores her parents’ history as activists. Gregory-Rivera will discuss El gobierno te odia [The Government Hates You, 2023], in which he documents the longest-running political surveillance program in Puerto Rico’s history.

The following day, July 16, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, the artists will offer a workshop entitled “Mirando juntos: Activating the Archive.” The workshop will center on the questions: Who decides what is preserved? How does the meaning of a photo change, depending on the context? These questions will guide the workshop, in which they will invite photographers, educators, activists, archivists, and the general public to reflect on the power of the archive.

In the workshop, the artists will use community and personal images to analyze (decode) and redefine (encode) their content, drawing on Gregory-Rivera’s work and Aperture‘s “Counter Histories” issue.
