Is the PS5 Media Remote Worth Buying?

The PlayStation 5 is capable of so many outlets of entertainment, including playing video games, watching your favorite films, or gaming out to new albums. Despite being known for it’s massive gaming history, the PlayStation family of consoles is also known for being a media center for families and entertainment buffs alike. In response to this, PlayStation created the PS5 media remote, capable of immersing you further in your entertainment experience.

However, is the PS5 media remote even worth buying? It’s listed on so many websites as being among the best PS5 accessories, but does it fit your personal needs?

There are plenty  of reasons why having a dedicated remote for all your entertainment needs outside of gaming is beneficial. For starters, it beats using a controller to navigate your apps when you have guests over. Realistically, it can be a bit embarrassing to pull out a video game controller when selecting the next song in your Spotify queue or which episode of King of the Hill should play next. The PS5 Media Remote has:

  • A dedicated Netflix button.
  • A dedicated Spotify button.
  • A dedicated Disney+ button.
  • A dedicated YouTube button.
  • Manual controls and voice controls.
  • Volume, rewind, play, fast-forward, and menu buttons.

At $30 USD, you have an easy-to-use, sleek remote that you can pair with your other media hardware. Additionally, it can seamlessly blend in with your home or entertainment space’s vibe.

The cons of the Media Remote are that it doesn’t really do anything different from your basic DualSense controller. Yeah, using a DualSense just means having to find and open whatever app it is you want to use, but it works the same as using the remote. Additionally, the remote cannot be charged the same way that a DualSense can be, and requires two AA batteries to operate. So, if you’re anything like me and don’t really carry batteries around the house anyway, then this remote might not be for you.
