Unfortunately, we have to report the news of a tragic incident that recently took place on Icon of the Seas.
On Thursday evening, while the ship was sailing near San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, a 35-year-old male crew member allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old female crew member multiple times during a dispute.
After the attack, the male crew member left the scene and jumped overboard into the ocean.
As always happens in these cases, a ship-wide alert was raised, and a search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched.
The crew’s rescue team located the man in the water, but his condition was immediately described as critical.
Official Statements from Cruise Line and Authorities
Royal Caribbean confirmed the incident and provided details in public statements.
“Our onboard security team responded to an incident involving two crew members in a personal dispute. One crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation”.
In a further statement, the cruise line explained that a rescue operation was immediately initiated, but sadly, it could not save the man.
“Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away. We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.”
Local Bahamian authorities also released information about what happened.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), the confrontation took place at about 7:30 p.m. local time on Thursday.
“Shortly before 7:30 p.m., a 28-year-old South African female crew member was allegedly stabbed multiple times by another crew member, a 35-year-old South African male.”
Authorities have classified the case as an isolated incident stemming from a personal dispute between the two crew members, and no other crew or passengers were in danger during the altercation.
The RBPF confirmed that an investigation is underway and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of the male crew member’s death.
The Ship’s Status and Victim’s Recovery

At the time of the incident, Icon of the Seas (one of the largest cruise ships in the world) was on a week-long cruise out of Miami, sailing to Royal Caribbean’s private island destination of CocoCay in the Bahamas.
As far as we know, the ship’s emergency protocols worked quickly. A passenger said that the overboard alarm sounded around 7 p.m., and the ship’s crew deployed a fast rescue boat to search for the fallen crew member.
After briefly slowing and turning the ship to aid in the rescue effort, the crew was able to recover the man’s body within an hour.
Despite this tragic event, the ship only had to make a short detour and its itinerary was not significantly impacted. Cruise tracking reports show that Icon of the Seas arrived at CocoCay on schedule the next morning.
Many passengers onboard were initially unaware that anything had happened, and at no point were guests put at risk by the incident.
