  • Commitment to a Smooth Transition: The European Commission and transport partners are proactively preparing with infrastructure upgrades and information campaigns to support an effective launch.
  • Future Travel Enhancements: The EES will be followed by the ETIAS online travel authorization system in late 2026, further modernizing entry into the Schengen Area.

Europe is set to enhance its travel experience with the launch of its new, state-of-the-art Entry/Exit System (EES), beginning this autumn on October 12. This innovative digital border system is a major step in making the EU a technologically advanced and secure travel destination. For non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen Area, the EES will create a more streamlined and efficient process for crossing borders.

The system is designed for modern travel. Upon their first entry, visitors will create a secure, digital travel profile at a self-service kiosk by scanning their passport and providing biometric information. This profile is valid for three years, making subsequent trips even smoother. For future entries during this period, a quick photo or fingerprint scan is all that will be needed, simplifying and speeding up the border crossing experience.

To ensure a seamless transition, the system will be introduced gradually over six months. The European Commission is working closely with member states and transport providers to support a smooth deployment. Travelers can look forward to helpful information campaigns, and partners like Eurostar are already upgrading their facilities to ensure the process is as efficient as possible. This new system will be followed in 2026 by the ETIAS online authorization, further modernizing travel for years to come.
