I saw an Instagram Reel by a wonderful soapmaker named Molly who is very outspoken politically, makes soaps with names like “Billionnaire Tears,” and fundraises for good causes. She posted a Reel that’s probably gone a bit viral by now about letting yourself be happy. Her point was that even though things feel horrifying and scary, the world needs us whole in order to fight back, and part of being whole is spending more time finding your joy than fighting.
You might have your feelings about that, you might disagree. But I noticed that after putting a lot of my time into trying to stop the Big Horrible Bill, when that bill passed I was flattened. And that feeling of being completely demoralized lasted longer than I expected. I have been using flower essences for dealing with my feelings about that and I’ve written about that for weeks—and they help! But none of those essences were taken with the intention of finding my joy.
So I’ve been thinking about that because intention can make a big difference in both choosing flower essences and having the best experiences possible with them. I always ask my custom formula customers what they intend before I choose essences for them. But all I wanted for myself was to feel better, and more recently when I started to use Scotch Broom, I wanted to have clarity about what I could do to make things better in the world when I really didn’t have a clue or the desire to fight anymore.
But an interesting thing happened. I’ve been waking up in the morning with more optimism and sometimes even joy. No specific actions came to mind at first—just feeling better and the desire to experience that more. Other flower essences I’ve been taking have been important (and still feel that way) but adding Scotch Broom was like adding a missing piece. Yesterday and today I started to feel the feisty side of myself come out and I’ve had moments of clarity about small things to do to take action politically in the moment, and I’ve been acting on those ideas. Nothing big, mostly sharing information online or words of encouragement. But I’m back on my feet and back in the game again. And finding my joy—without even intentionally trying—was a big part of that.

Flower essences are used to assist with mind-body-spirit interactions and individual results may vary. They are extremely dilute which makes them quite safe. But because so little physical substance can be detected in a flower essence solution, these products are presumed to work on an energetic or vibrational level—something that cannot be adequately tested by western scientific methods. Claims made by me, therefore, are based on personal experiences and the evidence of the combined multiple decades of case notes by Dr. Edward Bach as well as Healing Herbs and Flower Essence Services (the companies who make the ingredients I use in my products). This is not, however, accepted medical evidence or substantiated scientific evidence from a modern allopathic point of view. I am not a medical doctor or licensed healthcare practitioner.
