Chelsea fearfully ignoring two positions they should have signed in

I saw a post on X this weekend and I’ll start this article with it…

Mr George Smiley (@GeorgeSmileyOBE):

“Genuine comment..

“Genuinely believe & stand by it, we’re a top class centre back & top goalkeeper off giving it a proper go for the title..

“But let’s get more attackers..”

I agree with this statement.

Our attack is so much better this season because we’ve signed the right profiles and we’ve signed experience. It’s that simple.

If we add the right profiles and experience at the back, I’d have the confidence to say that we would challenge for everything this season. I genuinely believe this. I don’t think we’re perfect and have some inconsistencies to iron out, but if we added a top goalkeeper and a dominant and imposing centre back who is vocal, leads, and controls the play from the centre of the back, then I really think we are pretty much there with our squad build.

This is why it frustrates me, and angers me actually, to see Chelsea being obsessed with signing Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons in this final week rather than being obsessed with signing a goalkeeper and a centre back. I do think Simons is needed, absolutely I do. But as well as him, the priority should be a goalkeeper and then a centre back.

I honestly do not understand it. There’s no justification for it even if someone wanted to try and explain a reason for it. I’m not hearing that there isn’t the options there. We have incredible scouts, go find the options. It’s not like we haven’t had time, it’s a stupidly long transfer window. We need sales? Fine, make sales then! It’s all too late now of course, and it’s such a shame, because if we don’t address this then it will often come back to bite us in the butt this season, I guarantee you that.

I’m completely miffed….
